Tsum Valley Manaslu Trekking
Tsum Valley Manaslu Trek is located in the northernmost part of the Gorkha district of Nepal. Tsum Valley is popularly known as the “Hidden Valley” owing to its remoteness, and years of isolation from the outside world. Tsum comes from the Tibetan word “Tsombo” which means “Lively” and the village inhabitants are called Tsumba people. The local people are devout Buddhists and follow the teachings of Guru Rinpoche.
The Tsum Valley continues to preserve its ancient Buddhist culture and natural treasures. Tsum Valley Trek is very beautiful and interesting, with beautiful streams and rivers, towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, and hot mountain springs, the trail is strewn with artistic chortens and lined with Mani walls, made from thousands of stone slabs carved with details and prayers. Traditionally Tsum Valley was a distinct geographical area called “Tsum to Chuksum” which means thirteen provinces ruled as a single territory. The ancient remains of the Tsum Kingdom are still visible today. Tsum Valley is also considered a home to the legendary and elusive Yetis.
Tsum Valley Trek Overview
Tsum Valley’s acquaintance with Tibet ensures this is a unique and unforgettable trek, rich in culture, beauty, and wildlife, especially the Himalayan Thar, and Blue sheep which congregate in herds of 50 to 200. As previously mentioned on the Tsum Valley trek, you will come across some unique and historic monasteries, including Rachen Gumba and Mu-Gumba which lie on a beautiful plateau nestled in the lap of the valley, and Gumba Lungdang situated at the base of a conical hill, against the main slope of Ganesh Himal.
Although the Tsum Valley Trek and Manaslu Circuit Trek can be taken as independent treks, we have combined the two beautiful routes to offer you the best experience of the Himalayas’ local culture and nature.

After a hearty breakfast, we kick off our adventure of Tsum Valley Trek towards Maccha Khola, the starting point of our trek. The 3-hour drive from Kathmandu to Dhading Besi sets the stage for the trek, followed by a thrilling journey along the Budhi Gandaki River. The scenic route passes through picturesque villages like Morder and Simre but be prepared for a bumpy 6-7 hour ride on a winding dirt road.
The excitement continues with the crossing of a suspension bridge over the Sotikhola, guiding us through a forested area on a narrow and rocky trail. Experience the ups and downs on this path, maneuvering through rocky and narrow landscapes. Along the way, enjoy the mesmerizing sights of waterfalls, lush green forests, and towering vertical cliffs. Passing the Gurung-inhabited Lapubesi village.
Rest overnight at a local teahouse in Maccha Khola.
Start on the trek by following a narrow trail that takes you through Tharo and Khorlabesi before reaching Tatopani. Take a break to relax in the hot springs, providing a soothing remedy for fatigue and stress. Continue your journey of Tsum Valley Trek with a climb through a ridge, crossing a suspension bridge over the Budhi Gandaki River, and navigating another ridge. Traverse a short forest path, arriving at Doban. Ascend through a stone staircase, descend to meet the Yaru River, and climb up the stairs to Thado Bharyang. Cross the Budhi Gandaki River, ascend over a ridge, and finally reach Jagat for an overnight stay.
Start your early morning trek by climbing through a rocky ridge until you reach Sellari. Descend from Sellari towards Sirdibas. As you proceed, the valley widens, leading you to Ghattekhola and upstream to the Gurung village of Phillim. Walk in a northerly direction through the forest until you reach Chasapani. After leaving Chasapani, cross the gorge and walk for about half an hour to reach a beautiful waterfall. Continue through the Pine and Rhododendron forest, descending along the trail toward Tsum Valley Trek, until you reach Lokpa for an overnight stay at a local teahouse.
Today is a challenging day of Tsum Valley Trek as we gain altitude, and the trail mostly goes uphill. Enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayas, playing hide-and-seek along the trail. Descend through the beautiful village of Lungwa Khola and then ascend through a Pine forest to Gumlung. After crossing the Sirya Khola, we finally reach Chumling, known for Chumling Gompa, and the stone-paved streets of the village. Rest for the night at a teahouse.
We traverse to the other side, soaking in the views of Ganesh Himal during the Tsum Valley Trek while moving toward the Rainjam and Syarpu Khola. After crossing another bridge, we proceed to a village named Gho. Continuing for another 2 hours, we finally ascend to the upper Tsum Valley and reach Chhokangparo.
Overnight stay at a local guesthouse.
Today, we experience a significant increase in altitude, and the trail involves a steady ascent. Passing the Lama, we cross a suspension bridge toward Richen Gompa, also known as Nunnery Gompa. After exploring the gompa, we retrace our steps on the trail, passing through Shiar Khola, Lar, Phurbe, and Pangdun villages. We encounter several Buddhist monasteries and cross the final bridge before reaching Mu Gompa.
Today, we take a day to rest and explore Mu Gompa, witnessing the Tibetan landscape and the remote surroundings of Tsum Valley Trek time. Mu Gompa stands as the largest monastery in the region. Later, we walk back on the trail to Chhule and Phurbe. Reaching the east bank of Shire Khola, we arrive at Chhokangparo.
We return along the trail, enjoying the thick pine and rhododendron forest as we descend to Chumling and continue walking toward the lower Tsum Valley to reach Lokpa.
Descend along the trail to the junction with the Manaslu trail coming up from Philim. Cross the Budhi Gandaki (below its confluence with the Siyar Khola) and enter its narrow gorge, navigating an up-and-down trail with river crossings. After crossing a suspension bridge, the trail takes you through a bamboo forest and ascends to the village of Deng (1,800 m). The Tsum Valley Trek itinerary gives the route during the journey time.
Today’s Tsum Valley Trek starts by heading from Deng to the Rana village, crossing the Budhi Gandaki River via a suspension bridge. Continue ascending through Bhim Phedi and captivating forests to reach Ghap, where stunning views of Siringi Mountain accompany your journey to Prok village. Move upstream along a gorge, witnessing the powerful river, and after a steep climb, arrive at Namrung. Namrung is a charming Buddhist village with houses resembling Tibetan architecture, featuring monasteries, mani walls, chortens, prayer flags, and a small hydroelectric plant. There are many difficulties of experience taken from the Tsum Valley Trek time.
Start on a steep climb through forests, passing alongside barley terraces, shortens, and enjoying scenic views of Rupinala Pass, Mt. Manaslu, Gorkha Himal, Dwijen Himal, Saula Himal, and Lajing Peak. Reach the village of Lihi and proceed to Sho, Lho, and Shyala. A slight ascent brings you closer to Pungen Glacier, followed by a walk to Ramanan Kharka. Descend along the trail to a rocky riverbed, pass a chorten, traverse a wide grassy area with potato fields, and finally reach the village of Samagaun. It was a great experience taken from during Tsum Valley Trek time.
Today is a rest day of Tsum Valley Trek for acclimatization, but we’ll stay active by exploring Birendra Lake and other nearby spots in Samagaon. A visit to the ancient Pungyen Gompa offers breathtaking views of the glacier and Sherpa villages, providing insight into the local culture.
We walk through a desert-like path and a windy valley, reaching Kermo Kharka. Continuing past the Budhi Gandaki River, we ascend to a stone arc that leads us to Samdo, our destination just four kilometers from the Tibetan border. While visitors can’t cross the border, you can still enjoy the views of Manaslu glacier, Nagdi Chuli, Simnang Himal, and Mt. Manaslu from this point.
We cross a wooden bridge over the Budhi Gandaki River, ascending while catching glimpses of the Larkya glacier along the way. Continuing around the Salka Khola valley, we reach Larke Phedi, also known as Dharmasala. Today’s trek is shorter, allowing for additional acclimatization before tackling Larke Pass tomorrow.
An early morning walk leads us to the Larkya glacier, offering breathtaking views of Larkya Peak. The trail ascends, becoming steeper as we reach the end of the pass, revealing scenes of Himlung, Cheo, Kanggru, and the Annapurna. Keep an eye out for introverted creatures such as blue sheep, marmots, pikas, Tibetan snow-cock tracks, and snow leopard paw prints. Another ascent brings us to the village of Bhimthang, surrounded by beautiful pastures and the stunning peaks of Annapurna II, Kang Garu, and Cheo.
Climbing over the ridge and passing through pastures, we say goodbye to Bhimthang. Crossing a wooden bridge and navigating through forests of pine, juniper, and spruce, we intersect with a glacier and cross another bridge to reach the small village of Karche. Continuing on the trail through rocky terrain alongside the riverbed and contouring hillsides, we finally reach Dharapani. Dharapani marks the end of the Manaslu trail, and it’s the point where the Annapurna tourist highway begins. We’ll spend the night in a local teahouse for our destination of Tsum Valley Trek.
Following breakfast, we’ll bid farewell to Dharapani and embark on a 7-8 hour drive back to Besisahar. During the journey of Tsum Valley Trek, we’ll savor the picturesque views along the way. Upon reaching Besisahar, we’ll have a chance to refresh and rejuvenate.
Overnight stay at a local teahouse.
Gathering the wonderful memories created during Tsum Valley Trek, which will stay with you for a lifetime, we say goodbye to Besisahar. We embark on a private vehicle journey, traversing familiar roads with twisting rivers and rock gorges, heading back to Kathmandu.

Tsum Valley Manaslu Trekking Information
Physical Level and Preparation
The Tsum Valley Trek requires excellent physical preparation. This is an intense trip that involves long hikes and high-altitude navigation, so physical fitness is a must for a safe and enjoyable experience.
Preparation Tips:
- Cardiovascular Fitness: Engaging in consistent aerobic activities such as cycling, jogging, and trekking contributes to the improvement of endurance.
- Strength Training: To tackle difficult landscapes, strengthen your upper body, core, and leg muscles.
- Altitude Acclimatization: For difficult terrain, support your legs, core, and upper body.
- Pack Light: Make sure your backpack is as light as it can be. Just pack what you’ll require.
- Mental Preparedness: You should mentally prepare yourself for the challenges because this is a mental journey as much as a physical one.
Group Size
The Tsum Valley Trek is normally hiked by groups of two to fifteen persons with help from local laborers and a licensed guide. Individual experiences and friendships are fostered by small group numbers.
Accommodation
Trekking the trail allows you to stay anywhere from luxurious hotels to affordable teahouses, depending on your preferences and what’s available along the way. The following is a list of popular places to stay:
- Teahouses: These are basic, family-run lodges with a bed, basic meals, and a warm environment.
- Lodges: There are communities with resorts along the route that provide extra amenities like hot showers and adjoining restrooms.
- Tented Camps: Tented camps are another option for lodging in distant regions; these provide a more daring experience.
Luggage
Tsum Valley Trek is crucial to travel with minimal weight. Only carry a compact daypack containing essential items like water, snacks, clothing, and a camera. Larger equipment can be transported by a porter or yak between lodgings.
Spirit of Travel
It’s important to enjoy the trip just as much as the destination when walking the Tsum Valley Trek. It offers a chance to witness the way of life in the area, breathtaking landscapes, and long-lasting relationships with other hikers. In addition to testing participants’ physical boundaries, the journey acknowledges the natural world’s ability to survive.
The cost is influenced by the trekking season, the distance covered, the services chosen, and the availability of guides.
Guided Trek: usually includes a guide, lodging, food, and permissions. It ranges in price from $1,000 to $1,500.
Independent Trek: Independent Tourist is not Allow without guide. Guide needs a Trekking guide License that is compulsory.
Peak vs. Off-Season: Trekking gives better weather in peak seasons (spring, fall), but it’s more economical in off-peak (winter, monsoon).
Cancellation Fees:
Before beginning the Tsum Valley Trek, you must be aware of any potential cancellation costs in case your plans change. Before making a reservation, you should read and understand the cancellation policy as different tour operators may charge different cancellation rates. In general, the closer your departure date is, the higher the cancellation fees may be. When purchasing travel insurance, consider adding cancellation coverage to reduce potential losses.
Tips
- Pack Light: Packing light will help you avoid paying porter fees. Only clothing and essentials should you bring.
- Local Currency: It is recommended to bring small amounts of Nepalese Rupees for little purchases along the trek. Larger towns like Soti Khola have ATMs.
- Split Costs: To cut down on individual spending, if you’re traveling in a group, think about splitting the cost of lodging, food, and guides.
What Justifies Getting Insurance?
- Insurance is necessary for any adventurous travel, like, Tsum Valley Trek. It may appear like an extra cost, but the comfort and security it provides are priceless. The following are compelling arguments for thinking about getting insurance for your hike:
- Emergency Medical Coverage: There are certain hazards associated with trekking to high altitudes, such as the potential for altitude sickness and injuries similar to those experienced on Manaslu. Emergency medical costs are covered by travel insurance, including, if needed, helicopter evacuation.
- Lost or Stolen Property: Personal belongings can be lost or stolen anywhere, even on a hiking trip. Insurance may pay for the cost of replacing lost or stolen property, including electronics, equipment, and passports.
- Emergency Evacuation: If you have a critical illness or injury, you may need to be transported to a medical center via helicopter. Travel insurance often covers these evacuation costs, even though they can be costly.
- Search and Rescue: In rare, unusual situations, insurance could be able to help with the costs of carrying out a search and rescue effort.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Use reusable things and recycle as much as you can to reduce waste. Put rubbish in the appropriate container.
Energy and Resource Conservation: To save electricity, turn off the air conditioner, heaters, and lights when not in use. Lengthen your showers and conserve water.
After the trip
Exchange Knowledge: To encourage moral behavior when traveling, educate others about responsible travel practices and share your own experiences with them.
Think and Learn: After this experience, think about how you can travel more responsibly going forward.

Mr Ganesh receive me at the airport took me safe at the hotel at midnight. The day next we started the trek, our guide Bhoj Raj was a star. He was trustworthy, reliable and always smiling with a great sense of humors.
They all were excellent and was perfect in organizing any sort of tour in a perfect way. I can wholeheartedly recommend them, the Adventure White Himalaya Treks. Thank you !
Amazing life experience!
Trekking for 4 days in a rhododendron forest, waking up to fresh snow and the sunrise at Poon Hill, amazing adventure!!!! I will go back, I will most definitely contact Ganesh to schedule another adventure in the Nepal. He is a hard worker with great knowledge of the area.
Excellent Service
We dealt with Ganesh before the trip and are very happy with the service provided. Everything was as promised.
Our guide, Hari, did an excellent job in planning our whole journey and improvising wherever he saw fit. He also was very in tuned with our fitness level and we didn’t feel that we were pushed beyond our capabilities.
Our porter, Gopi, was also very helpful especially in keeping our spirits up during the whole journey.
All in all I would highly recommend Adventure White Himalaya Treks Pvt Ltd to anyone who is going trekking in Nepal.
Delicated Trip Guide
This trip – Annapurna Base Camp is one of the most remembered trip I had with amazing experience with both the mountain and good dedicated guide and porters.
